Australian woman to marry her Danish prince

It began with a meeting in a bar during the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Four years later, an Australian law graduate marries Denmark's crown prince in a royal wedding.

A prince-and-commoner wedding is nothing new in this nation of 5.4 million. But if the commoner is also a foreigner, a crash course in Danish ways is expected.

Crown Prince Frederik and his 32-year-old bride, Mary Donaldson, were set to exchange vows at Copenhagen's Our Lady Lutheran Cathedral before 800 guests, including European and Asian royals, Danish and Australian dignitaries and close friends.

Police expect 250,000 people to jam the streets of city to get a glimpse of the newlyweds' horse-drawn carriage.

Downtown will be closed to cars — except for the fleet of nearly 100 Volvo limousines and dark buses that will ferry the guests to and from the church.

One-third of Denmark's 10,000-strong police force is expected to be on duty and the airspace over Copenhagen will be closed for the event — except for a lone television news helicopter.

Festivities included more casual events, such as a boat race, a rock concert, a private party in a modern night club and hundreds of children dressed as princes and princesses cheering the couple.

Once wed, Mary Donaldson will move out of her apartment to a palace 10 times bigger. Frederik, who holds senior ranks in the Danish army, air force and navy, will get his own household staff and a parliament-approved salary raise from $700,000 to $2.4 million a year.
